Career Update: New Job & 3 Ways to Advocate for Your Career

I’m so excited to share that I have a new job! Starting this week I moved into a new role at my company. It’s a new team, new job, and lots more responsibility + I’m so excited! The more I learn about the role, the more I see it is a dream job for me!

How did this happen?

I loved my company but after a year in my role, I started to consider my long-term goals. It didn’t feel that my role was aligned to my career goals or skill set. I spoke with mentors + the resounding conclusion was it was no longer a fit for me. I knew I wanted to stay with my company so I started poking around in other departments to see what opportunities there were. I was lucky enough that my dream position was open + after interviewing for it, I was offered the new role!

While my situation happened with a little luck there are 3 key things I did to advocate for my career:

1. I sought support from mentors (this is why you need mentors! They can help you navigate these decisions)
2. I stayed honest with myself. I knew what I wanted + stayed true to that
3. I asked for what I wanted even though I was scared.

Remember it’s always a no if you never ask! You know yourself and your career best. Your career should make you happy. Yes there’s hard days but something I really encourage is that jobs are not just 40 hours a week. You should be focused on building a fulfilling a career + if your job isn’t doing that it may be time for a shift.
